Description

Ammonia or nitrogen trihydride is a toxic gas used as a refrigerant in absorption refrigerators and large commercial chillers and freezers. Its boiling point of -33.5 °C and high heat of vaporisation are ideal for many such applications. It is a strong basic reagent, highly soluble in water. In liquid form, it is a good ionisable solvent for many organic compounds. In aqueous solution, it can act as a chelator, forming metal complexes, notably with copper, silver and zinc.
