Description

Crude oil is almost impossible to define because the product is so different from any well or area to any other well or area. As it comes out of the ground, it is a mixture of hydrocarbons over a very wide range of molecular weight, along with many other organic molecules containing atoms other than hydrogen and carbon, usually with sand and water mixed in. It is useless until it has been refined.
