Description

Fuel Consumption is the amount of fuel required to travel some distance given some conditions.

Detailed description

Fuel consumption can vary widely and depends on many different aspects such as:

  • Weather.
  • Route.
  • Vehicle type.
  • Driver habits.

Over a consistent route when controlling for weather, for example on standardized driving cycles, the primary factors influencing fuel consumption are the:

  • Engine efficiency of the vehicle, which is dictated by engine and transmission design compared to energy required.
  • Physical characteristics of the vehicle such as the weight, rolling resistance of the tires, reference area, and aerodynamic drag, which in turn influence how much energy is required for the vehicle to accelerate and maintain speed.
  • Topography of the road
  • Type of fuel
