Description

Any of the compounds of carbon, bromine, and another halogen, often fluorine. They are essentially non-reactive but can decompose at high temperatures, releasing bromine. This property makes them ideally non-toxic at normal temperatures but excellent fire control agents. Their long atmospheric residence time and their aptitude to release bromine through photolysis in the ozone layer make them amongst the worst ozone-depleting substances and their use is strictly controlled under the Montreal Protocol. Notwithstanding, limited use is permitted in aircraft and submarines.
