There are several kinds of link in the EEWiki.

Contents

Internal links

These appear in the articles as either a blue or red type in the text. A blue link takes you to another existing article. A red link indicates that the article does not yet exist (please write it, if you can!).

The syntax to insert one is the same: article title and can be easily inserted by highlighting the article title (double-click if it's a single word) and clicking on the third icon (underlined Ab). Note that partial words are permitted. For example, there is an article entitled 'carcinogen' and you may be writing a sentence including the word 'carcinogens', you can make the link with carcinogens. The 's' will appear as part of the link carcinogens, even though it isn't within the brackets, provided there is no space.

Sometimes, you may find that the text you wish to put in refers to but is not identical to a relevant article title. For example (hypothetical), you may wish to link a verb to a noun in the sentence "It is possible to desalinate 100 000 tonnes of sea water per day.". There is an article desalination but not desalinate. The syntax to do this is desalinate. The sentence would then appear, "It is possible to desalinate 100 000 tonnes of sea water per day.", where the link will take you to the article.

Hint: the article titles are case-sensitive except for the initial letter of the first word, only, which is always upper case, even when the link is lower case. For consistency, it is best to ensure the titles and links are entered as entirely lower case (except where there is a name). For example, 'global warming potential' should not be capitalised. This is a quirk of the Wiki software. If you write it 'Global Warming Potential', it will not link to the article 'Global warming potential' unless you do a redirection as in the previous paragraph. However, 'desalination' and 'Desalination' link identically. If you make a link and it shows up red after saving the page when you thought it should show up blue, then this may be the reason. It is permissible to make abbreviated links in upper case, e.g. "... global warming potential (GWP)...". These will usually redirect to the unabbreviated article title.

Redirected internal links

In the previous sentence, I showed that 'GWP' was permissible. The syntax used on the article page for this is #redirect global warming potential. See Redirection for fuller details.

External links

You may have external links to any URL. The syntax is [full URL, including the protocol], e.g., . This then looks like [1]. Clicking anywhere on the reference number or the symbol will take you to the linked page. You may also use the fourth icon (globe/page) to create an external link.

You may also link with the text, in a similar way to the internal links. This eliminates the reference number. The syntax is very slightly different: with the text: note the mandatory space between the vertical stroke and the first word, otherwise the first word goes into oblivion! Another Wiki quirk!
