Wherever possible, scientific references should be added to all articles. Where controversy exists, it is a good idea to put in references to all the schools of thought, to provide a balanced picture. Please add references wherever you can to existing articles.
To place your reference where you want it, put it between between <ref> and </ref> tags and place the <references/> tag where you wish them to appear, usually after the References heading.
Example taken from the 2-bromopropane article:
...heating isopropanol with hydrobromic acid.<ref>Merck Index of Chemicals and Drugs, 9th ed. Monograph 5071</ref>
...very powerful reproductive toxin. <ref>Ichihara G, Asaeda N, Kumazawa T, et al. Testicular and hematopoietic toxicity of 2-bromopropane, a substitute for ozone layer-depleting chlorofluorocarbons. J Occup Health 1997;39:57-63.</ref>

It is also possible to put in references to Internet URLs e.g.,:
...figures for the UK <ref>UK, 'garbage can' of Europe [http://ezinearticles.com/?Study---UK-Garbage-Can-of-Europe&id=889798]</ref>
This allows for more powerful substantiation of statements and I recommend the use of references, where appropriate.
