Help:Start new article
From Environment & Energy Wiki
There are two ways of starting a new article, you may type the name into Search or you may click onto a red link.
In the former case, you will see
Click on the red "create this page" and you will see an editing box (also directly, if you clicked on a red subject link). Click into it and type {{subst:eew}} and click on "Save page" at the bottom. This installs a sample template which looks like:
Click on edit at the top of the page and you will see that each box is really a sub-template held between double curly braces and each title is held between double equals signs.:
You can over-write or delete any of the sub-templates. I often overwrite the sample one with {{no ref}} when I've not yet placed any references in the article.
Write the article in plain text. If you need secondary titles, then type 3 (or more) equals signs round the text.
Note the row of icons at the top of the editing box:
The first two are obvious for bold and italics, which respectively put three or two apostrophes round the selected text. The next one puts double square brackets round the selected text [[Link title]] and is for placing a link to another article title. When saved, the link will be in blue to an article that exists or in red to an article that does not yet exist, with a reminder in the "New pages to do" list. The big A automatically adds the double equals signs for a section title. The last one is to insert a horizontal line. The others will be explained in other Help files.
It is useful to note that many HTML codes can be embedded in pages. This is, by far, the easiest way to create tables, if you have a WYSIWYG web editor, such as Expression Web or FrontPage. Design your table as if it were to be incorporated in a web, then copy and paste the HTML code.
NOTE: The Editing window is not limited in time, but the Save page function may time out with a red warning at the top of the saved page. If this happens, all is not lost: hit the "Go back one page" arrow in your browser, select the whole edited text (Ctrl-A) and copy it (Ctrl-C). Save page again, hit the edit tab, select all (Ctrl-A) and paste (Ctrl-V). Don't forget to Save page again! This is a quirk in MySQL databases and is best avoided by hitting the Save page button, say, every 10 minutes or so.
