Description

Ozone depletion is the reduction of ozone in the ozone layer. The quantity of ozone varies naturally, often from day-to-day in a given location, but depletion occurs when man-made chemicals destroy the ozone, especially in a chain reaction, upsetting the natural equilibrium. Monoatomic chlorine and bromine, from the decomposition of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons etc., as well as nitrogen oxides are noted ozone-depleting substances.
